These seven posters were labeled with topics ready for members to weigh in their level of priority for the JACC organization to focus efforts.


Dinner was catered by Banana Blossom restaurant. Fried rice, Chicken and Broccoli stir fry and egg rolls (empty tray on the left!)

The meeting was held at the Boys and Girls club on Irving Ave. The room was located off the upper level that looked out over the gymnasium where kids played basketball.

John Zanmiller is a probation officer that works out of the Jordan neighborhood. State Senator Linda Higgins serves the Jordan neighborhood at the state capitol and always helps JACC in any way she can.

Minutes of the Jordan Area Community Council Annual Election: The Neighborhood Elects Board Members & Approves New By-Laws

Tonight, an annual membership meeting of the Jordan Area Community Council was held at the Boys & Girls Club. Tonight's agenda was the following:

First, the following committee reports were presented to the community:

Housing & Development Committee Report:

Mr. Rother, yielded his time to the Pohlad Foundation for a report. Terry Egge reported that in 2009, 45 homes were involved in the beautification project in Cottage Park. In 2010, 55-60 homes were involved in the beautification project in Glengale Park project, which almost extended to Logan Pond. Ms. Egge reported that PCYC's youth programs in Cottage Park increased from 40 to 200 kids. They were involved in the painting at 26th and Penn. St. Anne's put in the parking lot. All of the home improvement loans were use (50 households). Ms. Lyon reported that they anticipate a bike shop on 26th Avenue next year. The Pohlad Foundation is also looking to have free Zuma classes next year for children. Ms. Lyon announced the opening of Kindred Kitchen.

A motion was made, and seconded, to seat all candidates to the JACC Board of Director's by unanimous consent. The motion passed and the following candidate were voted onto the board by the community as official representatives:

Eric Johnson was unanimously elect the NRP Elector by the community.

New JACC By-Laws:

After a discussion, new provisions of the JACC By-laws were adopted and new by-laws were adopted.

Earlier this year the City of Minneapolis began making appointments to boards and commissions in a more streamlined way offering opportunities to be appointed to a board or commission two times each year. We are beginning the Fall cycle and this email is to share with you the information about the current openings as well as provide you with some resources to help your community stay informed. We would appreciate any assistance your organization could provide in getting the word out about these volunteer opportunities.

Positions are open until filled however applicants are encouraged to apply by October 1, 2010 as applications will be reviewed beginning October 4th.

Jordan Neighborhood Annual Meeting and Elections

October 21, 2010 at 6:30 p.m.

(Location to be determined)

Nominations for Board of Directors open through September 17, 2010.

Twelve openings available. These are volunteer (unpaid) positions.

Candidates must:

Live in the neighborhood (between West Broadway, Emerson and Lowry Avenues),

Own property in the neighborhood, or

Be employed by a business, non-profit or government organization located in the neighborhood

To nominate yourself or someone else, request a nomination packet from the Jordan Area Community Council (JACC) office by calling 612-353-3601 or e-mail request to nom-comm@jordanmpls.org.

Board members are expected to be a member of at least one committee and attend at least two meetings a month (the board meeting and their committee meeting). Board members should expect to spend about 10 hours a month on Jordan-related activities (includes meeting time).

MPD Alert: Attention Residents regarding Copper Pipe Thefts‏

Fourth Precinct August 2010

Facts:

The Fourth Precinct has seen a significant increase in Residential Burglaries to vacant homes where copper pipe or aluminum was taken or attempted. The map below indicates the highest concentration of these incidents.

What to keep and eye out for:

· Most burglars tend to be males between 30-50 years old
· Trucks and or cars parked or driving down alleys loaded with metal piping and or other household appliances.
· Suspects will walk up to the spigot (water connection) on the side of the house and pull on it to see if the copper pipe connection is loose indicting that the copper pipe has already been removed.
· A vacant house has an open door or window.
· The sound of breaking glass or other loud noises.
· You smell gas or see water coming from a house.
· Someone waiting or loitering in front or around a vacant house.
· A strange, occupied car in your alley or on the street.
· A person going door-to-door in a residential area, especially if one or more persons go to the rear of the home.

Call 911 immediately if you see any of the above.

Residents are the Key to Prevention.

Change in polling place location for the Primary - Ward 5-Precinct 8 (Jordan)

Polling Place change for Ward 5-Precinct 8

River of Life Church becomes a double polling place for 5-8 and 5-10

August 2, 2010 (MINNEAPOLIS). The Minneapolis Office of Elections has designated River of Life Lutheran Church (in the gym) at 2200 Fremont Ave N, Mpls MN, 55411 as the new polling place for that Ward 5-Precinct 8 for both the Primary and the General election. Election officials were notified that a recent inspection found the building that had been designated as a polling place for Ward 5 Precinct 8 is currently unusable as a polling place.

River of Life Church is outside of the precinct but is nearby and also serves as the polling place for Ward 5 Precinct 10.

The Hennepin County Elections office will send a postcard to all registered voters in the precinct alerting them to the change. Signs at the former polling place will direct voters to the address of the new polling place.

Jennifer was on vacation. Lt Heimerl and I was at PCYC till about 715. No one else attended. We had a good discussion about crime and safety. He told me not to get discouraged by the attendance and the Lt said he and Jennifer will work with me to get this active.

Community Advisory ~ 7/1/2010 ~ Door to Door Sales of Residential Burglar Alarms

The Minneapolis Police Department would like to advise residents that it has received information of unlicensed door to door residential alarm salesmen operating in the 4th Precinct.

According to information received these unlicensed sales people are also implying that they are operating with the consent of the City of Minneapolis by telling people "The City wants us out here."

They are approaching houses with systems, saying they are with Monitronics and GE, and they'd like to test the existing system to make sure it's working properly.

These sales people are NOT operating with the consent or at the behest of the Minneapolis Police Department or the City of Minneapolis.

All door to door sales people in Minneapolis must be licensed, and must carry their license with them. They must produce their license when asked.

No legitimate alarm service provider will ask you if they can "test" your existing system. Do not disclose any information about your existing security system to anyone who knocks on your door.

If you do encounter someone selling security systems door to door, ask to see their Peddler's License. If they cannot produce one, they are not legitimate. Do not let them into your home, and by no means should you discuss the details of your home security system with them. Note their description and clothing, their direction of travel, and call 911 to report unlicensed solicitation and suspicious activity.

Dear Chair Monroe,

Alliance Housing Inc. is making application to the City of Minneapolis for the development of a multi-family housing project to be built at 2601 West Broadway.

The development, Gateway Lofts, is a 46 unit building that will provide a new, high quality housing option for people living and working in the community. The unit mix includes 6 two bedroom units designed as live-work units, each having its own front and rear entry. Floors 2 and 3 will have a mix of studio and one bedroom apartments. The first floor will have offices for property management, a community meeting room with access to the patio on the west end of the building, and accessibility to the common areas from an elevator connecting the parking garage to the first, second and third floors as well as a front entry (from West Broadway) and rear entry (from Upton Ave N.). There will be a total of 18 one bedroom units and 22 studio units. The building will include 42 underground parking stalls and will incorporate bike stalls in the parking plan.

The application to the City of Minneapolis will include a Conditional Use Permit for a multi-family dwelling of 5 units or more in the R-5 zoning district, variance for front and corner side yard set backs, variance for transformer and walkway/trellis and trash enclosure location, and variance for increasing fence height on retaining wall.

Hello All,

I will no longer be the Chair, nor member of the Jordan Area Community Council (JACC). I am resigning effective immediately.

JACC has made progress during my tenure as chair; we have secured our finances, and resolved the financial and legal challenges we were faced with.

We have revised the By-laws, that will be presented at the annual meeting. We have re-established the JACC flash, and have branched out into other fields of mainstream media.

We have vigorously championed for the safety of all our neighbors in the Jordan community, and we will continue to do so.

The following meeting minutes were submitted by committee co-chair Daniel Rother:

Mayʻs meeting came to order @ 6:30 PM. The meeting was held at the JACC office.

The attendees were Daniel Rother, Polly Peterson, Deb Wagner, Greg Hiniker, Chic Hanssen,

Georgianna Yantos, Todd Heintz, Jeff Houge, Lynn Riskedale, Connie Beckers, Keith Reitman,

Claudia Perez, Randy Lane, James Powers, Rock H. OʼBanasa from NHS, Chris Dettling of

PPL and Robert Porter from North Community Development Center.

Mayʼs agenda was reviewed and Georgianna Yantos was added to the agenda to talk

about 26th Av. N.ʻs Bikeway. The Aprilʼs Housing & Development Committee meeting minutes

were read over & approved by the committee.

First on the agenda was Connie Beckers, who introduced herself and her new business,

The Goddess of Glass & Friends, located at 2205 Lowry Av. N., opening on June 5th. The store

will be open 3 days a week. The store will sell gifts, have an art gallery and teach classes on

glass art.

Next, Rock OʼBanasa from Northside Housing Services talked about a $100,000 loan,

approved by NHS board of directors, to James & Helen Powers, owners of 2115 Emerson Av.

N., for a rehab of 2115 Emerson Av. N.. The Powers purchased and payed cash ($65,000) for

the property which needs a rehabilitation before it can receive a certificate of Occupancy and

they can move in. The loan will come from Jordanʼs revolving loan fund which has limits on the

amount that can be loaned for any rehab ($50,000). NHS and the Powers are looking for

approval from Jordan for the full loan amount of $100,000. After a discussion about this issue

Keith Reitman made a motion to approve the full amount of the loan by the Housing &

Development Committee, the motion was seconded by Deb Wagner and a vote was taken to

send this issue on to the JACC Board with the H & D committeesʼ approval. The vote was 8 for

and 1 against, so the motion passed. After the vote it was noted there would $2,000 in closing

cost which would be part of the loan.

Robert Porter as the Executive Director of the newly formed Northside Community

Development Corporation came by to introduce himself and talk about NCDC. Robert

mentioned the corporation is organized as a 501c and that the group is interested in helping

improve all of northsidesʼ neighborhoods and is looking for a representative from each

neighborhood to sit on its board of directors. He talked about his experience in creating and

being part of neighborhood development centers and their success in improving neighborhoods.

Robert left a multipage description of NCDC as to who, what and why The NCDC has been

organized. Robert asked for Jordansʼ participation with the NCDC.

After Robert Porter, Chris Dettling from PPL introduced himself and presented PPLsʼ

intention to rehab a fourplex apartment @ 2521 Girard Av. N. and rent the units as affordable

units to low income people in section 8. Chris was asking for a letter of approval from the

neighborhood for support for the project. Dan Rother made a motion to write a letter of support

from the neighborhood for PPLsʼ rehab of 2521 Girard, Tod Heintz seconded the motion and the

H & D committee unanimously approved the motion.

Jeff Houge, representing Autozone (an auto parts retailer), and Randy Lane owner of the

properties on W. Broadway Autozone wants to develop, presented revised plans for the store to

be developed on W. Broadway to the H & D committee looking for its support for the project to

take to the JACC board for its support from the neighborhood as it goes to the city for its

approval to move forward on purchase of the properties from Randy Lane and construction of

the store. Jeff Houge said they have support from the West Broadway Coalition & property

owners within 100ʼ. He said Autozone will own the property and that it will be well managed and

that Emerge will be helping in the hiring of employees and that the employees will be found

within the neighborhood. The city will have to approve zoning changes to the properties from C2

to C1 for the project to move forward. Keith Reitman made a motion to support the new,

improved & highly artistic Autozone plan, Chic Hanssen seconded the motion. The H & D

committee discussed their proposal and took a vote. The vote was 3 for approval and 4 against.

The proposal for support of the development by the H & D committee was denied. The

Autozone presenters still intended to present to the JACC Board for their approval. Randy Lane

noted that if the development for an Autozone store was denied by the city that the property

would continue to be a car wash.

The last agenda item was Georgianna Yantos on the 26th Av. N. Bikeway. Georgianna

said she was trying to organize a major meeting with interested parties. Public Works is not

supportive in moving the project forward, but Hawthorn neighborhood wants to get Public Works

to move the bikeway project into Quickworks ( determining costs of project) to move it forward.

Hawthorn neighborhood is moving forward on its own by contracting with Biko Associates to

determine costs of alternative solutions 2,3 and 4 of the bikeway proposed by Biko and the

neighborhood is committed to spend $20,000 of their NRP funds. They are asking for a letter of

support from themselves and the Jordan neighborhood to our board for Public Works to bring

the bikeway project forward. Other supporters of the project are Bob Miller from NRP, mayor

R.T. Rybak, and city council members Barb Johnson, Don Samuels, and Diane Hofstede. Bob

Miller said the meeting would be on May 19th. Dan Rother made a motion to send a letter of

support from the Jordan neighborhood to the city council for submission to CLIC (Capital Long

range Improvement Committee). The motion was seconded by Tod Heintz and passed by the H

& D Committee.

IV. Pohlad Foundation Update and Discussion

- Fall beautification project will be in Glengale Park area

- New “Tot lot” and equipment for older youth in Glengale is coming

- Another youth program in Cottage Park this summer

- “Go Run” will start and end in Cottage Park (5.22.2010)

- Will help with JACC Clean Sweep on May 15th and will bring volunteers

- Will bring 100 volunteers for fall Beautification project

- New hire for youth entrepreneur project

- Bike Shop will be after Madison, WI model

-Would like JACC to be a part of the youth cleanup project (Pohlad will fund the wages)

-Will build more community gardens with teams of youth

- Tree trust (re-did Jordan Community Garden) will beautify Irving Triangle on 22nd and Irving Avenues.

- There will be a new Café at 1200 Broadway and a kitchen

- The car dealership on Broadway will be painted by Juxta

V. AutoZone Discussion Continued

Board discussion. Concerns: AutoZone is seeking conditional approval without a site plan and lack of public art compliant with W. Broadway Alive plan.

MK. Browne moved to send back to the Housing Committee for further discussion on AutoZone’s plan for noise, litter, maintenance, security, and gateway to Cottage Park. T. Jaramillo seconded the motion. After further discussion the board roll called the vote as follows:

VI. Bike Lane Project Discussion

Presentation from Shawn Murphy from the City of Minneapolis – Public Works.

VII. “NoMi-J” Marketing and Branding Discussion

L. Riskadel moved for the board to authorize the use of the term “NoMi-J” (which stands for “North Minneapolis-Jordan”) as an alternative reference for JACC. T. Jaramillo seconded the motion. D. Wagner’s idea and he spoke in favor of the motion. Motion passed unanimously.

VIII. Lease for JACC House (2009 James Avenue North, NoMi)

Lease for the JACC House will expire at the end of April (this month). New lease is for 3 yrs. Runs May 1 to April 30 with 3% rent increase each year. 2011=$1,420; 2012=$1,465; 2013=$1,510.

E. Johnson moves the board to approve signing the new 3 yr. lease with Ackerberg. T. Jaramillo second the motion. Discussion on need of hand railings on the steps and need to check the electricity due to the lights burning out in the front of the house. All agreed this should be address with Ackerberg before signing lease. After further discussion, the vote was taken. Motion passed unanimously.

IX. JACC Records at the Library

JACC has several years of records stored at the Mpls. Library. The library called and told us to pick up the records or they would be destroyed. It is one pallet of boxes.

T. Jaramillo agreed to pick up the records and put them in the garage. The Board then agreed to review the records during clean sweep.

X. Revisions to the By-Laws

D. Wagner moved the board to approve the by-law changes “as is” which were presented by the By-Law Committee and Working Group Sessions.

E. Johnson seconded the motion. Discussion: Next step for by-law changes is to include a copy of the proposed changes in the next JACC-Flash and Post on the JACC-Flash-NoMi blog. The changes must be read at a community meeting and can be adopted at the following community meeting.

Motion passed unanimously.

XI. Spring Edition of the “JACC Flash”

Kelly Browne and D. Wagner finished the neighborhood Newsletter.

XII. Minneapolis’ Call For Public Art Sites

E. Johnson moves the board approve the “Irving Triangle” at 22nd and Irving to be a site in the Jordan neighborhood for public art and to authorize E. Johnson to respond to the call on behalf of the board.

T. Jaramillo seconded the motion. Brief discussion. Motion passed unanimously.

XIII. Treasurer’s Report

D. Wagner submitted the Treasurer’s report. Highlights are as follows: the audit is done (D. Wagner recommends JACC switch to permanent accrual system) ~ low marks on audit due to previous administrations practice; Franklin Bank~ extension granted until 5.17.2010 (again problems caused by previous administration); and Probation house ~ need resolution to approve new lease with Hennepin Co.

D. Wagner moves the board to approve the new lease with Hennepin County to rent the house owned by JACC at Irving Avenue. T. Jaramillo seconded the motion. Discussion followed. Motion passed unanimously. D. Wagner authorized to draft the resolution and sign on behalf of the board.

L. Riskedel moved to accept the Treasurer’s report (which included the Auditor's Report by Mike Wilson, and the minutes from the 3.31.2010 Auditor's Report Meeting). E. Johnson seconded the motion. No further discussion. Motion passed unanimously.

Possible Bicycle Shop in the Jordan Neighborhood

We are looking for families and individuals willing to participate in a focus group to study possible community bike shop in North Minneapolis. The group will meet once on Thursday April 8th at 6:30pm at PCYC (2210 Oliver Avenue North, next to the Capri Theater). This study is funded by the Pohlad Family Foundation and conducted by Linda Tacke, 952-932-9662 www.Leadershiptactics.com .

The bicycle shop is envisioned as a social entrepreneurship that builds a business base over the next 3-4 years that is almost self funding. It will be a reliable, welcoming and reasonably priced bike shop selling bikes new and used; biking accessories that have a "cool factor" and provides outstanding mechanical services.

Additionally, it is a place which youth and families choose to make as their own. We see it as a hub in the community for bike classes, bike touring, bike art, and contests. Additionally, we see it as a retail outlet for healthy food/snacks such as smoothies, sports drinks, protein bars, coffee and sandwiches. Please let Linda or myself know if you can participate. Good Evening Everyone -

The next NOMI Home Buyers Tour is right around the corner!! Many of you may be aware of how the NOMI Home Tours operated over the past two years; a high touch, guided tour of 5-7 homes that were on the market in the neighborhoods of NOMI (North Minneapolis) and I might add, aided in the sale of 15+ homes (that we are aware of).

The tours were met with tremendous success and enthusiasm however, we have changed the format for our 2010 tours based on feedback from our tour guests.

Our next tour will take place on Sunday, April, 11th. As always, we will begin with a "Meet & Greet" at a local establishment from 11:00am to 1:00pm - - 42nd Avenue Station, a wonderful new coffee shop in Webber-Camden will play host (4171 Lyndale Ave N) - - this will give prospective home buyers an opportunity to meet current residents of NOMI, get a taste of one of our excellent local establishments, chat with Realtors, members of Neighborhood Organizations and learn about the current financial incentives that are being offered. This will also be the starting point of our tour - a place to pick up a packet listing all homes that will be held open that day. All homes on the tour will then be held Open from 12:00pm - 3:00pm for guests to view at their leisure!

This is to announce the third and final public meeting for the Lowry Avenue Strategic Plan. It will be an open house with a short presentation. Here is the time and place:

The Lowry Avenue Strategic Plan is an update to the 2002 Lowry Avenue Corridor Plan. The goal in updating the plan is to sharpen the vision for Lowry Avenue, and to create an implementation plan for accomplishing its goals. This final meeting will have elements of both.

* An implementation plan will be presented that will focus on how to achieve the community's goals for Lowry Avenue.

* A detailed land use plan will be presented that will guide future development

Dennis Wagner Is the New JACC Treasurer

Hello JACC,

Last night we had an immediate convening of the JACC Board to address some of the challenges on the immediate horizon. I was deeply moved by the participation of the JACC Board to effectively resolve these issues. We have appointed a new Treasurer, Dennis Wagner, who is enthusiastic about the skills he brings to this position.

I was encouraged, in large part due to the meeting being perhaps one of the most effective meetings that I can remember in a long time, it epitomizes the concept of Together Everyone Achieves More!!! We worked together for the attainment of a common goal; the improvement of the Jordan community. However, our work is not done, we still have to meet those challenges and overcome them. Adversity offers you two choices...victory or defeat!

No Majority Support of JACC Board of Director for Legacy Management Broardway Curve Project for Affordable Housing at "Broadway Green Apartments" (f/n/a "Agape Apartments")

The JACC Board of Directors considered, at the request of Legacy Management and Development Corporation, a provisional letter of support for its proposed development, the Broadway Green Apartments (formerly known as Agape Apartments). Legacy Management is proposing a 51 unit affordable housing apartment building on the corner of W. Broadway and Logan Avenue in the Jordan Neighborhood.

A majority of Director for the Jordan Area Community Council did not support issuing a letter in support of the project.

Legacy is invited to come to the next board meeting if the project is still alive.

"Dessert with Don" - Fourth Mondays, 7pm at UROC

Here is a virtual video reminder from Jordan resident and our City Councilmember for the Fifth Ward, Don Samuels.

Don is reminding Fifth Ward residents to join him each fourth Monday for his new monthly forum called "Dessert with Don". Each month a different topic will be discussed, speakers and presenters will give info, questions will be asked and answered, meeting and greeting of other Fifth Ward residents will take place, but most especially, some dessert will be enjoyed!

The Dessert with Don forums will take place at the new UROC facility, which is at 2001 Plymouth Ave N, just east of Penn Ave. It's a great building that the U of M purchased and renovated for purposes of a convening mechanism to bring together community organizations based in North Minneapolis, city and county representatives, faith-based leaders, and university faculty and staff. It's a great looking building and a true glory to have as part of our broader northside community. Next, hopefully the U can open a satellite campus at the Jordan Elementary site, right?

So mark your calendars for the fourth Monday, which happens to be tomorrow, and hopefully we can all greet each other at "Dessert with Don".

"The Mpls Parks & Recreation suggested they would come on board with the 26th Ave plans if we included a park on 26th in Jordan. Additionally Keith Ellison has suggested he could earmark money for 26th in a bill later this year. The steering committee is updating our concept to include a splash pad park on the old big stop site. Will there be any push back from the neighborhood as we go forward???"

Greetings:

The purpose of this letter is to request Twin Cites Community Land Bank’s help in resolving the matter of several troubled properties in the Jordan neighborhood. The properties in question are 2200, 2206, 2210, and 2218 Irving Avenue North.

All of these properties are in seriously dilapidated condition, vacant, and are the primary cause of sagging property values in the immediate area. The property located at 2200 Irving N. is an “arson house” and is completely uninhabitable at this time. The other properties are also suffering from structural deficiencies which render them unsafe to inhabit. Additionally, the time leading up to the summer of 2009, these properties were all drug houses and served as focal point for criminal activity in Forest Heights area in the Jordan neighborhood.

The Jordan Area Community Council is asking that proactive action be taken on this matter. On behalf of the Council and the Jordan Neighborhood, we are requesting that the Twin Cities Community Land Bank take steps to acquire these troubled houses in an effort redevelop the properties, stop the free-fall of neighboring land values, and prevent further criminal activity from taking place at the properties in question.

The neighbors in the general area have agreed in principal that public acquisition of these properties is a logical first step in remedying this issue. Should your organization acquire these properties, it would nullify the risk of unscrupulous investors purchasing them; with the intent of renting to anyone, which would almost certainly result in an increase in criminal activity.

Hi fellow NoMi-Jo's! { that's NoMi Jordanites, fyi}

I have been thinking about the new year, time for new focus and new projects, reflecting on the past.

One thing I always seem to wish for when thinking about my neighborhood, is the desire to see more people, get more great neighbors out and about and participating in our neighborhood revitalization efforts. One of the things I love about being an activist in NoMi is the great people that I meet! I'm always blown away by the tremendous amount of interesting, talented, wise people that I meet on the northside. It makes me feel like I'm exactly where I need to be. Right here! Right now!

So, I thought I'd put a little challenge out there - let's all do some personal outreach and recruiting. Invite someone to a neighborhood meeting. Spread the word. Bring a new neighbor to an event. Create a buzz about all the good things going on here.

In fact, one goal for each of us to meet is this:

The 2010 Challenge. Take the year 2010. Now break it down into two numbers. 20 and 10. Can you meet 20 new Jordan neighbors this year? Can you bring 10 of those new neighbors to a JACC event or meeting? Can you get some new readers to this blog? That could be counted as recruiting efforts!

So there it is. The 2010 Challenge!

Meet Eric Johnson - Newly Appointed JACC Director

With 10-year of experience in the field of information technology, Eric has become JACC new Webmaster. Currently finishing a B.S. in management information systems at Augsburg College, Eric has called Jordan home for the past five years. "I would love to see more Ma' and Pa' shops on Broadway," Eric said, "We need to see more economic development brought into the community."

"My purpose of joining JACC was to become involved in the re-development of the area between 22nd and 23rd on the east side of Irving," he responded to questions about his motivation for participating in the neighborhood group. He strongly believes that success of the community will rest on building education for the residents.

"I want to see people take pride in the neighborhood," he said..."besides, I'm a Battlestar Galactica junkie!"

Meet Dennis Wagner - Newly Elected Director of the Board

DLW, a home owner resident since 1984, is a seasoned world-traveler with visits to over 23 different counties. A Vietnam-era Navy vet, DLW is no stranger to the various cultures. He earned a B.S. degree in industrial technology from UW-Stout (Summa Cum Laude). His top skill is business-to-business negotiations along the lines of intergrades leading edge technologies. He balances his professional life with sailing catamarans, remodeling, woodworking and philosophical endeavors with neighbors.

He previously served on the JACC board in 1985 and 2006, making the 2009 election his third term.

When asked what he would like to accomplish with this term, DLW said, "I just want to push the ball forward. We are really all just temporary residents in time."

Clean Sweep 2009 - Photo Journal

Spring cleaning arrived in Jordan on May 9, 2009 from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM. We had two trucks and over 15 volunteers to help “person” the trucks. At the end of the project, we collected over 169 tires and filled both garbage trucks.

My first posting to the new JACC-Flash-NoMi blog will be mostly pictures.

Pictures of the community enjoying the rededication ceremony at the garden this past summer. Dozens of neighbors and friends of the Jordan neighborhood gathered on August 22, 2009 to dedicate the gate and enjoy the garden. The Pohlad Family Foundation and Jordan Area Community Council teamed up to sponsor a piece of art made by young artists from the Chicago Avenue Fire Arts Center.

The colorful gate that you see is the fabulous collaborative piece put together by several members of the Minneapolis urban youth who are engaged in artwork as their self-expression vehicle. In the weeks leading up to the ceremony, Tree Trust workers, shown in the last photo, reformed the layout of the plants and flowers and pathways through the garden. As you can see in the pictures, it turned out lovely.

Thanks go out to everyone involved in making this symbolic artwork become a permanent fixture in our beloved Jordan, and for the hardwork involved in updating the plantings and pathways for the community to enjoy. Unfortunately there was too much going on for me to capture everyone and everything, it was a busy time! But hopefully the pictures will warm you up on this cold December morning.

In October, JACC resolved to recommend that the City of Minneapolis also try to acquire if and when they become available all properties on the south side of 26th Ave N within the Jordan neighborhood (from Broadway to Emerson). We also recommend that a ten foot right of way facing 26th Ave be retained on these parcels for the future development of the 26th Ave Bikeway and Greenway, leaving the remainder of these parcels available for resale and/or development.

Meet Dave Haddy - JACC Secretary

Dave Haddy is a 5 1/2 year resident of Hillside Ave in the Jordan Neighborhood. A self-proclaimed geek since birth, Dave "reads a lot," and enjoys sci-fi and other materials. Although a kid at heart, Dave has passion for uplifting the community. Dave is well known for successfully answering questions on the TV quiz show "Who Wants to Be A Millionaire?"

"I want to build off our progress over the year to re-aline the focus of the organization with our mission," he candidly stated. "And I hope to one day have a comic book store within walking distance of my house," he added. When asked about how he felt about being the JACC Secretary, Dave said, "I love to write and this is a great opportunity to give back to my neighborhood."

Meet the New JACC CHAIR: Vladimir Monroe

In October 2009, the Jordan Area Community Council elected Vladimir Monroe to be the next CHAIR of the 45 year old community council serving the Jordan Neighborhood and its 5,000 constituents. The previous year's Chair and current Vice-Chair, Michael "Kip" Browne, nominated Mr. Monroe for the position. In doing so he said, "Vladimir displays the level of integrity and leadership this organization needs to thrive during challenging economic times. He has my full confidence and support to take on the duties and responsibilities of the Office of the Chair."

Vladimir, an emerging community leader, was appointed by Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak to serve on the Minneapolis Commission on Civil Rights, a position he held for several years before leaving to become Minneapolis City Council Member Don Samuels' 2009 Re-election Campaign Manager. "I'm honored to have the trust of my neighbors and will work hard to continue the good work and progress we have made in the past year," the honorably discharge Navy vet stated. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science (cum laude) from Edward Waters College in Jacksonville, Florida.
